This 8-hour EM 385-1-1 course is based on the 2024 USACE Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) Requirements manual. It will provide the information you need to stay up to date on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) training standards. This course is designed for Site Safety Health Officers (SSHOs) who need to fill the annual training requirement. It is also intended for anyone who needs a refresher on the essential elements of the manual.

This is an online course with an interactive outline. The scenes have text with good visibility along with interactive elements to provide an engaging learning experience. The course covers 10 sections of EM 385-1-1. Some lessons include a real-life case study which emphasizes the importance of following safety procedures and protocols. There is also a final exam that must be passed with a score of 70% or above for successful course completion.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participants will learn about:

• The responsibilities of Site Safety & Health Officers (SSHOs), Collateral Duty Safety Officers (CDSOs), and other project personnel performing work on Federal construction, service, and environmental contracts.
• How to assess unsafe worksite conditions.
• How to properly prepare a site-specific Accident Prevention Plan (APP).
• Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) forms and their development.
• Site personnel training, incident response and reporting procedures, jobsite auditing, and hazard communication.

• Select and use the appropriate PPE on USACE contracts and contracts executed under EM 385-1-1.
• Describe the proper methods for material handling, storage, and disposal.
• Describe the proper equipment and methods for fall protection.
• Explain the requirements for safe access, use of ladders, and protection for floor and wall openings.
• Describe the proper methods for protection during excavation and trenching activities.
• Describe the safe use of hand and power tools.
